When to Use Semi-Log vs. Log-Log Graph Paper

Logarithmic scales plot data where values span multiple orders of magnitude. By compressing exponential curves into straight lines ($y = a \cdot e^{bx}$ becomes linear on semi-log paper; power laws $y = a \cdot x^k$ become linear on full log-log paper), engineers can quickly extract slope coefficients and time constants by hand.

Semi-Logarithmic (Log Y, Linear X)

Ideal for electrical RC/RL circuit discharge curves, radioactive decay half-life plots, bacterial population growth, and audio frequency decibel curves across linear time intervals.

Full Log-Log (Log X & Log Y)

Required for Bode frequency response plots, aerodynamic drag vs. velocity relationships, and fluid dynamics friction factors across multiple decades of Reynolds numbers.
