The Cornell Note-Taking System

Developed in the 1950s by Professor Walter Pauk at Cornell University, this layout separates lecture recording from review questions and synthesis. By structuring your paper into distinct functional zones, the system encourages active recall over passive reading.

Cue Column (Left) A 50 mm to 65 mm margin used after lectures to formulate quiz questions, keywords, and core concept prompts.
Class Notes (Right) The primary note field (lined or 5mm quad grid) for rapid capture during lectures, labs, or book reading.
Summary Zone (Bottom) A 40 mm to 50 mm block at the base of the page reserved for summarizing the entire sheet in 2 to 3 concise sentences.
